England & Australia Legends raise £100,000!

November 20th, 2013

Restart is one of several charities to benefit from an amazing £100,000 raised by the England Legends v Australia Legends match at Twickenham Stoop on 31 October. Members of the 2003 Rugby World Cup final squads met once again for a special charity match to celebrate the ten year anniversary of that momentous final.

The pace may have been slower and the shorts a little tighter this time around, but ten years on from their historic victory, England’s heroes still reigned supreme over their Wallaby rivals, with a final score of 17-12 to England.

But while Jonny Wilkinson was the hero a decade ago, the Legends game had a new star on show in the form of hooker, Steve Thompson. The former Northampton forward scored an incredible 80m try that left the crowd gasping in disbelief and the 35 year old gasping for air.

Team mate Ben Kay came to the rescue with an oxygen mask, but Thompson played down the incredible run: “That’s what the game is supposed to be about – the old boys getting out there and just trying to chuck the ball around.”

And England Legends Captain Jason Leonard summed up the feeling of all the players: “It was a great game to be involved in, but I think the bodies will be very sore tomorrow morning!”

The match boasted a combined total of over 1,450 Test Caps and launched a weekend of special events to celebrate the ten year anniversary, including a gala dinner, also attended by the original England squad, that raised an additional £80,000 for Restart and The RFU Injured Players Foundation.
