Following a number of repeated concussions, former Leeds and Gloucester player, Jon Pendlebury, was forced to retire in 2012 aged just 29. Keen to remain in rugby, he took up the post of Assistant Academy Coach at Leeds Carnegie.

With the help of a career transition grant from Restart, Jon was also able to study part time for a Sports Coaching and Development Degree.

“All players know retirement will come at some point, but I didn’t think it would come as soon as it did. I’ve found it very hard and I’m still coming to terms with it, but I definitely think it would have been a lot harder if I wasn’t still involved in rugby. Life is very different now, but I’m enjoying a new focus and really looking forward to getting my qualifications and developing my coaching career.”
