Restart Rugby

Restart Rugby

Restart Rugby is the official charity of The Rugby Players’ Association (RPA). Formerly known as The RPA Benevolent Fund, Restart Rugby was founded in 2001 to support professional players forced to retire through illness or injury.

We provide financial and practical support to players and their families during difficult times, including help with the cost of medical treatment, rehabilitation equipment, counselling, education and career transition. Restart Rugby is also there when players need emotional support in coming to terms with losing the game they love.

Restart Rugby is a Registered Charity No.1113160 that is funded entirely through voluntary donations and fundraising activity. We rely on the support of businesses, rugby supporters and the players themselves to raise funds each year for those in need. A considerable amount of pro bono support is given by The RPA, including staff time, office space and fundraising opportunities at high-profile commercial events.

The Rugby Players’ Association (RPA)

The RPA is a membership organisation that acts as the trade union and representative body of professional rugby players in England. It was founded in 1998 and provides its members with independent advice on matters concerning employment, welfare and personal development.

Players at each Premiership Club are looked after by a regional RPA Personal Development Manager (PDM), who provides advice and support throughout a player’s rugby career. The RPA offers contractual advice, access to independent legal and financial services, insurance, education and vocational training – all the services a player needs to perform to the best of their ability on the pitch, while also developing themselves away from the game to prepare for life after rugby.

These services are also provided for England Sevens, England Women and the most recently relegated Premiership Club, enabling players to continue the education and career planning programmes they began the previous year. The RPA also acts as the exclusive commercial agent for the England Team, negotiating match fees, win bonuses and image rights.
