Hampson to receive Blyth Spirit Award

April 28th, 2015

The Rugby Players’ Association (RPA) today announced it will recognise the extraordinary achievements of Matt Hampson at the 2015 RPA Players’ Awards, which takes place on Wednesday 13th May at Battersea Evolution, London.

Hampson has been confirmed as the recipient of the RPA Blyth Spirit Award, in association with Towergate insurance. 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of Matt’s accident, which left him paralysed from the neck down and breathing via the aid of a ventilator.

Since suffering his accident Matt has shown incredible courage and has battled hard to live as normal a life as possible. He has established the Matt Hampson Foundation, which gives support and assistance to others who have suffered catastrophic injuries.

On receiving his award Matt said: “I’m extremely humbled to be the recipient of this award. Ever since my injury, the support I have received from the RPA and Restart Rugby has made a huge difference to my life. It’s great to be part of an event that raises such valuable funds for Restart Rugby and all the players the charity helps.”

RPA Group CEO, Damian Hopley, said: “Matt is a true inspiration to all of us and the determination he has shown since his accident has been nothing short of incredible. The fact that he has now focused his energy into his Foundation and helping others who have suffered similar injuries to himself is testament to his remarkable character and why he is so deserving of this award.”

The RPA Blyth Spirit Award in association with Towergate Insurance is given to an individual or group who has shown remarkable courage in the face of adversity, and is voted for by the RPA Players’ Board.
