Sale legend Cueto to receive RPA Special Merit Award

May 1st, 2015

The Rugby Players’ Association (RPA) today announced that Sale Sharks, England & British & Irish Lions’ wing, Mark Cueto, is to receive the TAG Heuer Special Merit Award at the RPA Players’ Awards 2015, on Wednesday 13th May at Battersea Evolution, London.

Cueto has spent 14 years with the Sharks making over 300 appearances for the North-West club and he will hang up his boots at the end of the season bringing the curtain down on a glittering career. He is currently the Aviva Premiership’s all-time leading try-scorer, including one in Sale’s Premiership final victory against Leicester Tigers in 2006, has 55 England caps to his name and was part of the British & Irish Lions squad to tour New Zealand in 2005.

“It’s a real privilege to receive this Award and I’d like to thank the RPA Players’ Board for this honour. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a fantastic career and to retire on my own terms, but some players don’t have that choice, that’s why the role of the RPA is so important and it’s great to be part of an event that supports such a great cause.” said Cueto.

Damian Hopley, Group CEO of the RPA, said: “Mark’s contribution to our game is undisputed. To spend 14 years with one club and to retire as the Aviva Premiership’s all-time leading try scorer is an achievement that I doubt will ever be matched. He has been a fantastic servant to Sale, England and the game of rugby and has done so with a smile on his face throughout. I have no doubt he will go onto enjoy even more success in his future career.”
